01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
About this place
Stepping up to the counter, most diners start by ordering the steaming signature niku dofu. Simmered patiently in a large pot, the tofu absorbs the savoury depth of the dashi stock all the way to its centre, finished with a generous mound of chopped green onions. Its gentle, sweet-savoury profile sits comfortably alongside bottled beer such as Sapporo Lager or a glass of sake.
The house specialty, yakiton, covers a wide range of pork cuts, including kashira (temple meat), tongue, heart, cheek, shiro (intestine), cartilage, and liver. Sized on the smaller side, each skewer allows diners to sample numerous varieties without feeling weighed down. Alongside the meats, vegetable skewers such as shiitake mushrooms, ginkgo nuts, garlic, and shishito peppers provide balance, while raw vegetable sides of turnip or cucumber serve as clean palate cleansers.
The interior centres on counter seating, maintaining a calm, unpretentious atmosphere suited to solo diners or pairs having a quiet drink. Seats begin filling shortly after the doors open at 16:00 in the evening, though reservations are not accepted and payment is cash only. It is a welcoming spot to slip through the noren after work for hot tofu, charred skewers, and a quick drink.
